AGENDA

REGISTRATION is open until October 21, 2018 - NOW Extended to October 23, 2018.

NOTE: New students registered for the workshop!  If you apply to EcologyPlus and are accepted by the program, you will be eligible to apply for professional conference scholarships to advance career development in environmental and ecology related fields of up to $500. Funds should be related to relevant career goals and used by August 2019.

Application information will be released soon.

This workshop further develops an understanding of the role of science in the public policy process. Our previous workshop focused on the identification of stakeholder groups and their positions as the first step in a larger, interconnected process.

Other stages include:

1) problem identification, 2) agenda setting, 3) policy making,
4) budgeting, 5) implementation and 6) evaluation.

Today’s workshop will examine the second and third steps with particular attention to the role and use of science in developing policy. Participants will read an article by Noah Shannon, The Water Wars of Arizona, published in the New York Times Magazine Section on 19 July 2018.

At the workshop, participants will examine the legislative process, engage in activities designed to define alternatives and examine how to position the need for policies on the bureaucratic agenda. In addition to stakeholder groups, participants will consider other actors, including think tanks, interest groups, media, and government officials. Time permitting, participants will also consider possible policies that might be promoted to address the problems outlined in Shannon’s article.

Who Should Attend:

Undergraduate and Graduate Students interested in environmental policy, environmental justice and ecology-related careers across all sectors and all disciplines.

Host:

Julie Shackett, HR & Recruitment Manager, The Wilderness Society

Facilitator:

George Middendorf, Professor of Biology, Howard University

Keynote Speakers:

Kevin Bryan, Keystone Policy Center – Using Science to Foster Collaborative and Sustainable Outcomes

Tim Mealey, Senior Partner and Managing Director, Meridian Institute – Using Science to Solve Problems and Make Informed Decisions

About the Series

EcologyPlus will offer a series of Skills Workshops that will utilize a case study based format to enhance participant understanding of the sills needed for ecological and environmental careers.  Centered on environmental issues, participants will be exposed to skills valued by employers in a range of fields, including academic institutions; non-profit organizations; federal, state and local agencies, and businesses. Specific skills to be covered will include a variety of “soft” and “hard” skills like project management, data management, writing, communication, fundraising, collaborative skills, stakeholder and citizen engagement, team-building, customer service, political organization and outreach, networking, financial analysis and planning, and negotiation.
